DISCOVERING A SUSTAINABLE TOURISM DESTINATION
The Azores are a group of 9 volcanic islands lost in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean, halfway between Europe and America.
Still untouched by mass tourism, the archipelago is a dream destination for nature lovers, hiking enthusiasts, and travelers passionate about responsible and sustainable tourism.
It is the best place in Europe to spot whales—especially sperm whales—and many species of dolphins.
Here, you can climb volcanoes, explore massive lava caves, and even swim inside volcanic craters.
The Azores are also shrouded in the myth of Atlantis. These are, in fact, considered the tallest mountains on Earth when measured from the ocean floor. Among them, Mount Pico stands out: at 2,351 meters, it’s the highest peak in Portugal. Reaching its summit offers a breathtaking view over the central island group—a truly “king of the world” moment.
Certified Sustainable Destination
Thanks to their unique natural, historical, and cultural heritage, the Azores are the only archipelago officially certified as a “Sustainable Tourism Destination.”
This means that the region is committed to protecting biodiversity, preserving landscapes, promoting renewable energy, managing waste and water responsibly, and supporting environmental education and local products.
Three Island Groups:
- Eastern Group: São Miguel and Santa Maria
- Central Group: Terceira, Graciosa, Faial, Pico, São Jorge
- Western Group: Flores and Corvo
These are lands of volcanoes, lagoons, lush forests, and colorful hydrangeas that contrast with the deep blue Atlantic.
Each island is stunning in its own way, and it’s impossible to pick a favorite. I always recommend visiting more than once, slowly discovering their unique magic.
For a first-time trip, an organized itinerary is the best way to go. You’ll experience the highlights safely and comfortably, guided by an expert who knows every hidden corner.
Here’s a quick introduction to the islands included in my custom itineraries:
São Miguel: Known as the “green island,” it’s the largest and only one with natural hot springs. Highlights include:
- The geothermal area of Furnas, where you can try the traditional cozido cooked in volcanic steam
- The Terra Nostra Botanical Garden with its iron-rich thermal pool
- The iconic Sete Cidades crater lakes (Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde)
- Tea plantations (the only ones in Europe!)
- Hidden waterfalls and incredible viewpoints along volcanic ridges
Terceira: Famous for festivals and the traditional tourada à corda. Don’t miss:
- Angra do Heroísmo, a UNESCO World Heritage site and once the capital of Portugal
- Biscoitos, stunning natural rock pools teeming with fish
- The Algar do Carvão volcanic chimney and Gruta do Natal lava tube
- Sulfur vents and fumaroles of Furnas do Enxofre
Pico: A land of dramatic contrasts:
- The summit of Pico Volcano
- Black lava-stone houses and vineyards
- Whale watching (best in the archipelago!) and the fascinating Whaling Museum in Lajes
- UNESCO-listed vineyards bordered by lava rock walls, with ocean views
- Don’t miss a wine tasting of local varietals
São Jorge: The island of fairy-tale hiking:
- Lush trails through forests, waterfalls, and breathtaking fajãs (flat coastal lands)
- The hidden Simão Dias natural pools with crystal-clear waters
- Known for its cheese – visit a dairy farm and sample various aged cheeses
Faial: The island of sailors:
- The 400-meter-deep Caldeira crater, circled by a spectacular hiking trail
- The moon-like landscape of Capelinhos, formed during the 1957 eruption
- The vibrant harbor of Horta, with its sea-themed murals and the legendary Peter’s Café Sport
Enjoy a gin & tonic where sailors from around the world have gathered for centuries, soaking in the Atlantic charme
