Embarking on a journey through the mythical lands of Mesopotamia, between the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, was a dream come true. These were the places I once studied about in school, never imagining I would have the opportunity to witness them firsthand.
In February 2023, leading a small group of adventurers, we ventured into the heart of Iraq, guided by our Kurdish local guide, to explore the wonders of this ancient land. Little did we know that our journey would be filled with unforgettable experiences that would leave an indelible mark on our hearts.
Iraq is not yet a popular tourist destination, and there are many misconceptions. However, in reality, the local people are welcoming, friendly, and eager to reconnect with the world. During our visit, we didn’t encounter any other tourists; we were the only ones! Locals stopped us on the streets, asking to take selfies and thanking us for coming. “Iraq is a safe place!” they repeatedly assured us.
The population is extremely kind, despite having endured the loss of significant artistic heritage and the tyranny of Saddam Hussein’s regime. Exploring looted palaces and sites of ISIS attacks was another eye-opening aspect of the trip. For those who cherish authentic travel experiences, I wholeheartedly recommend it. For me, it was one of the most fascinating and culturally enriching journeys ever, precisely because of the stark differences and the prevalent Islamism. Immersing oneself in such a vastly different reality from our own was incredible.
Our journey began in Baghdad, where the echoes of history resonated through the bustling streets. From there, we traveled to Samarra, a city steeped in Islamic history and home to the iconic Malwiya Minaret. Continuing on, we made our way to Al-Ukhaidir, marveling at the impressive ruins of the Abbasid-era palace.
Continuing on, we made our way to Kerbala, a city of profound spiritual significance, where we paid homage to the sacred shrines of Imam Hussein and Abbas.
Kerbala to Babil to Najaf: From Kerbala, we journeyed to Babil, where the ancient ruins of Babylon stood as silent witnesses to millennia of history. Continuing southward, we arrived in Najaf, a city revered by Shia Muslims as the final resting place of Imam Ali. Here, amidst the tranquil atmosphere of the Wadi al-Salam cemetery, we reflected on the timeless teachings of Islam.
Najaf to Nasiriyah to Uruk and Back: Our travels then took us to Nasiriyah, a city steeped in history and culture, where we explored the ancient site of Uruk, one of the earliest cities in human history. As we wandered through the ruins, we were humbled by the enduring legacy of Mesopotamian civilization. Returning to Nasiriyah, we continued our journey southward, passing through Chibayish and Qurna before reaching the vibrant city of Basra.
But perhaps the most memorable moment awaited us on our last evening, as we were invited into the home of our Kurdish guide. There, we dined on the floor, eating with our hands as tradition dictates, surrounded by the warmth and hospitality of our host, his family, and the cultural richness of Iraq. It was a truly magical and unique experience that will remain etched in our hearts forever.
Our journey through Mesopotamia in February 2023 was nothing short of extraordinary. From the ancient ruins of Babylon to the bustling streets of Baghdad, and from the spiritual sanctuaries of Kerbala to the tranquil marshes of Nasiriyah, each destination offered a glimpse into the rich tapestry of history, culture, and heritage that defines Iraq. As we bid farewell to this land of ancient wonders, we carry with us memories of unforgettable experiences and a profound appreciation for the timeless beauty of Mesopotamia.
