Have you ever slept in a stone windmill, facing the ocean, on a remote island in the middle of the Atlantic?

For my partner’s birthday, a lover of the Azores islands, I organized this romantic weekend: two nights in the Moinho de Pedra.
Thanks to the precious collaboration of the owner, Joao Silva, I managed to prepare a wonderful surprise for him, presenting him with a marvelous cake decorated with a windmill and a delicious bottle of local wine! I can’t even describe the effect and his emotion… a tear came to his eye!
We find ourselves on the island of Graciosa, in the Azores Archipelago. It is the island of windmills par excellence.
At night, when there are no lights on the horizon and everything is dark, a blanket of stars envelops you. To stay embraced, admiring that enchanted sky with its constellations and the sound of the ocean in the background is pure magic.
Moinho de Pedra
The windmill is located in Santa Cruz, a stone’s throw from the port, and enjoys an absolutely fantastic view of Ilheu da Praia.
It is an ancient mill that has maintained its rustic appearance intact and whose interior has been delightfully renovated to create apartments.
Three apartments have been recovered. I stayed in the first one, but I saw all three. Each one is different, carefully furnished with unique objects: many pieces of furniture were made by the owner himself, the legendary Joao Silva, who invested in this project, realizing his dream.
When he bought it, that mill was abandoned and in decay. With a lot of commitment and passion, he gradually gave it new life, taking care of every detail, and now it’s a marvel!
The contrast between the gray stone, the red dome, the blue ocean in front, and the green hills behind it, seems like a natural painting.
The mill is open all year round. I stayed there in November; being a low season month, we had the privilege of being there alone, enjoying that little piece of lost paradise, all to ourselves!
I recommend this magical place for a special occasion: to celebrate an anniversary or your partner’s birthday; or simply to spend a romantic weekend.
A different experience, to spend a #magicalnight with your partner… After all, it’s not every day you get to sleep in a windmill, listening to the voice of the ocean lulling you to sleep!
