New Zealand is a paradise for adventure lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, and exploring it by bike offers a truly immersive way to experience its wild, untamed beauty. From the majestic mountains of the South Island to the golden beaches of the North Island, every pedal stroke unveils breathtaking landscapes and moments of deep connection with nature.
For my first cycling adventure in New Zealand, I chose to start with one of the easiest and most scenic trails: the Great Taste Trail—a 188 km route that can be tackled in sections over a day or two, or cycled in its entirety over four days, depending on your level of experience and endurance.
Riding the Great Taste Trail: A Scenic and Accessible Route
I decided to cover around 60 km of the trail on a classic bike, as the route is mostly flat. However, if you prefer a more relaxed ride, you can easily rent an e-bike.
This trail is perfect for all levels and follows a coastal route, passing by bays, beaches, and wooden boardwalks. One of the highlights was reaching Mapua, where I took a ferry with my bike to Rabbit Island—a well-organized service specifically designed for cyclists.
Rabbit Island is a natural reserve scented with eucalyptus, a favorite weekend spot for Kiwi families who gather for picnics, beach outings, and bike rides with their kids. Outdoor living is a huge part of New Zealand’s lifestyle, and cycling through this scenic area made me appreciate just how deeply connected Kiwis are to nature.
I continued my ride to Nelson before looping back along the route, following the navigation track on a dedicated app, which made the journey seamless and stress-free.
Bike Rental and Logistics
I rented my bike from Kiwi Journeys ( https://www.kiwijourneys.co.nz/trails ) a company specializing in multi-day cycling tours.
Their service was excellent—they provided detailed maps, route information, and high-quality gear. My bike was brand new and well-maintained, equipped with a storage bag, repair kit, and helmet—all in accordance with New Zealand’s cycling safety regulations.
I really appreciated their professionalism and attention to detail, making my first Great Ride in New Zealand smooth, safe, and unforgettable.
