Kayaking with Seals in Kaikoura: A Unique Experience (Without a Paddle!)

Some travel experiences stay with you forever, not just because of the beauty of the place but because of the deep connection with nature. Kayaking in Kaikoura was one of those. But this wasn’t just any kayak trip. Here, instead of paddling, you pedal on the water, just like riding a water bicycle!

A small but game-changing detail that made the experience even more special. And for me, it meant taking countless photos and videos! (Check out my Instagram reel!)

Kaikoura is a true gem on New Zealand’s east coast, and I was lucky enough to enjoy two sunny days that made me appreciate it even more, with the sunlight reflecting beautifully on the ocean!

There are so many activities and hikes to explore here, from a scenic walk along Kaikoura Beach to the Kean Point peninsula, where the nature reserve begins, home to seals, albatrosses, gulls, and many other bird species.

You can explore it with short walks or longer treks, but kayaking is undoubtedly the best way to experience it all. Why? Because it gives you the rare opportunity to observe seals up close in the water, something you can’t experience in any other way!

This area is home to whales, dolphins, and, most of all, New Zealand fur seals, playful and curious creatures that thrive in these waters.

A Perfect Day on the Water

On the day of my adventure, the ocean was calm, the sky was a brilliant blue, and the sun was shining—we couldn’t have been luckier! Even our guide kept exclaiming, “What a lovely day!” I booked with Seal Kayak Kaikoura, one of the best operators in the region and the only one offering these special pedal-powered kayaks instead of traditional paddles!

The pedal kayak allows you to move effortlessly and naturally on the water. And the best part? Hands-free paddling! This meant I could take stunning photos, record videos, and fully immerse myself in the moment without worrying about handling a paddle. The peaceful and immersive atmosphere of kayaking always amazes me, and this time was no different.

We were just six people, a small, intimate group, a perfect example of sustainable tourism.

An Unforgettable Encounter with the Seals

And then, after a short while, we spotted our first seals! We approached slowly and quietly to avoid disturbing them and observed them in their natural habitat. Some were rolling in the water to clean their fur, while others basked in the sun on the rocks. It was a pure moment of wonder. I felt like a silent guest in their wild and perfect world.

A Sustainable Tourism Experience

One of the best things about this experience is its low environmental impact.

No motors, no noise—just us, the ocean, and nature. The pedal-powered kayak lets you move without disturbing the wildlife, making it a truly responsible and sustainable way to explore the ocean.
